There have been 29 different versions of Excel, stretching from 1985 to the present day. These days most users today will have Excel 2016, 2019 or 365. Each version of Excel has been significantly different to the last, and the Mac and Windows versions are still very different today.

I have an excel file that I have used and accessed daily for over a year. I accidentally overwrote some content and saved it. The next day I tried to pull up version history to restore the previous version, but there was no history present. I have navigated to the temp files, to the location Excel says it saves version history, etc. Excel, from Microsoft, is a powerful spreadsheet application for Mac, Windows, and OS/2. Excel was first released for the Mac. When it was ported to Windows 2.x, they started at version '2.0' to one up current Mac version. There was never a DOS version. Instead, DOS and 8-bit platforms used the older Microsoft Multiplan. Excel was later bundled as part of Microsoft Office.

Most current packages for Office for Mac

The following table lists the most current packages for the Office suite and for the individual applications. The Office suite includes all the individual applications, such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. All packages are 64-bit only. The build date is listed in parentheses, in a YYMMDD format, after the version number. The install package is used if you don't have the application already installed, while the update package is used to update an existing installation.
